As a resident of New York City and the daughter of an Ecuadorian immigrant, I find Adams’ rhetoric deeply concerning and damaging.

The Importance of Human Rights

It is crucial for Mayor Adams to prioritize human rights over harmful discourse. Immigrants make up nearly a third of New York’s population and contribute significantly to the city’s cultural, social, and economic fabric. By spreading fear and misinformation, Adams not only perpetuates harmful stereotypes but also undermines the human rights and dignity of those who have chosen New York City as their home.

Understanding the Push Factors

As Mayor Adams embarks on a trip to Mexico, Ecuador, and Colombia, it is my hope that he gains a deeper understanding of the human rights crises in the region and the push factors that drive people to leave their homes and seek asylum in the United States. Over 300,000 migrants and refugees have crossed the dangerous Darién Gap in the Colombia-Panama border region this year, with many en route to the United States.

Venezuela

The largest number of migrants crossing the Darién Gap are Venezuelans, escaping a humanitarian emergency characterized by food and medicine shortages, as well as widespread human rights abuses by security forces, armed groups, and gangs.

Ecuador

Ecuadorians represent the second-largest group to cross the Darién Gap, fleeing record levels of homicides and insecurity caused by organized crime groups. These individuals are seeking safety and a chance at a better life for themselves and their families.

Haiti

Haitians make up the third-largest group crossing the Darién Gap. The ongoing violence and insecurity in Haiti, coupled with rampant killings, kidnappings, and sexual violence perpetrated by criminal groups, have led individuals to undertake the treacherous journey in search of safety and stability.

Addressing Policy and Funding Imperatives

Rather than discouraging migration, Mayor Adams should use his platform to advocate for policies that prioritize human rights and foster safe and legal pathways for migrants. This includes urging the Biden administration to end deadly migration deterrence policies, rescind the abusive “asylum rule,” and expand opportunities for individuals to seek asylum in the United States.

Additionally, Adams and other mayors across the country should redirect funds from migration deterrence efforts towards supporting humanitarian groups, bolstering shelter systems, providing legal aid, and allocating resources to assist newly arrived migrants with their integration into their new communities.

By prioritizing human rights and taking concrete actions to support migrants, Mayor Adams can send a powerful message about New York City’s values of inclusivity, compassion, and respect for the dignity of all individuals.
