Activists Arrested for Peaceful Protest against Private Jets Sales

In an effort to spread awareness and bring attention to the issue of private jets and their impact on the environment, at least 102 climate activists were arrested in Geneva, Switzerland after protesting against Europe’s largest private jet fair, the European Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition. The activists held banners and staged a peaceful protest, which was aimed at halting private jet sales. This action was organized by Greenpeace, Stay Grounded, Extinction Rebellion, Scientist Rebellion, and other climate justice groups, representing 17 countries.

The Protest

During the protest, activists chained themselves to aircraft gangways, occupied jets, and held banners with tobacco-style health warnings that marked the jets as toxic objects. The banners warned buyers and the public that private jets are a serious threat to our future, planet, and present-day social inequality. The demonstration disturbed the event that featured Europe’s biggest private jets sales fair by Geneva airport.

The Impact of Private Jets on the Environment

The sales of private jets are increasing, and there is a rising concern about their impact on the environment. According to a recent report, the global fleet of private jets has more than doubled in the last two decades. The total value of private aircraft sold in the past decade is estimated by the industry to be approximately US$241 billion. Private flights produce approximately 50 times the CO2 of a train per passenger kilometer. They also have a disproportionately harmful impact on micro-particle pollution and noise, endangering our health and climate.

Excessive Use of Force

Reports show that the authorities used excessive force against the peaceful protesters. Greenpeace International has urgently demanded the immediate release of the climate activists. The activists were not disrupting commercial air traffic, nor did they enter the airport’s taxiways or runways. Despite this, they were arrested and have been detained for more than 20 hours. Private jets and other luxury emissions are largely excluded from key EU legislation addressing greenhouse gas emissions, highlighting the need for greater awareness and action on this issue.

Editorial and Advice

It is crucial to consider the impact of private jets and what they represent in terms of social and climate injustice. They are an extreme form of privilege, and they cause significant harm to the environment while contributing to global inequality. There is a need for individuals and society as a whole to take greater responsibility for their actions and their impact on the planet. This issue is particularly urgent in light of climate change, which is already causing significant harm to people and lasting damage to the planet. Governments should take immediate action to reduce the impact of private jets on the environment by legislating against them and provide greater attention to alternative, more sustainable modes of transportation.
