War Crimes
Amnesty International claims that Israel intentionally launched disproportionate attacks that resulted in civilian casualties, which is considered a war crime. This action demonstrates a pattern that Amnesty International has documented in previous Israeli operations. The international community has failed to hold Israel accountable and this impunity allows for further violations and ensures repeated injustice. It is the responsibility of the international community to act and to hold Israel accountable for the repeated and unlawful killings and destruction of Palestinian homes.
Collective Punishment Against Civilians
The destruction of Palestinian homes in the Gaza Strip was unlawfully conducted by Israel and caused a heavy toll on the civilian population, including people living with disabilities. Amnesty International’s investigation found no evidence that the destroyed or damaged residential buildings had been used to store weapons or any other military equipment, or that rockets had been launched from their direct vicinity. Israel has an obligation to protect the lives of civilians and civilian objects even in wartime. The targeted destruction of civilian homes is a form of collective punishment against the civilian population, which is a violation of international law, including the Fourth Geneva Convention.
Apartheid System
The root cause of this unspeakable violence is Israel’s system of apartheid, according to Heba Morayef, Middle East and North Africa Regional Director at Amnesty International. This system must be dismantled, the blockade on the Gaza Strip immediately lifted, and those responsible for the crime of apartheid, war crimes, and other crimes under international law held accountable. The international community has a responsibility to hold Israel accountable for its continued violations of international law, including the crime against humanity of apartheid under both the Apartheid Convention and the Rome Statute.
Editorial and Advice
The situation in the Gaza Strip is a humanitarian crisis and requires immediate action from the international community. The continued violence against the civilian population is unacceptable and must be condemned. The blockade on the Gaza Strip must be lifted to allow for the provision of necessary humanitarian aid. A resolution to this conflict requires the international community to hold Israel accountable for its actions and to put pressure on them to follow international law. The people of the Gaza Strip deserve a peaceful future, free from violence and suffering, and we cannot ignore their plight.
