The crackdown on protests led to instances of human rights violations and crimes under international law, according to the report by Amnesty International. The organization has previously presented preliminary findings on the investigation, and the delegation will now present the complete findings to the government, including the request to guarantee the right to peaceful protest.
During the meeting, Amnesty International has scheduled with President Dina Boluarte; the organization will deliver a petition with 200,000 signatures to raise awareness about the excessive and lethal use of force and structural racism against demonstrators. Additionally, the delegates will meet with victims of human rights violations in different parts of the country this week before returning to Lima for meetings with government officials.
Accountability and Justice
Amnesty International aims to hold the Peruvian authorities accountable and ensure they address the human rights violations committed by state repression during the protests. “We are here to accompany the victims of grave human rights violations in their pursuit of justice, and to create pressure to hold the Peruvian authorities accountable,” said Agnès Callamard, secretary-general of Amnesty International. The results presented by the delegation will include recommendations for actions that the government needs to take to address the excessive and lethal use of force.
Final Thoughts
With increasing political tension, it is necessary to ensure that the fundamental human rights of the citizens are protected. Governments must address the grievances of its citizens and ensure that violent repression of peaceful protests does not happen again. It is crucial to hold the authorities accountable for human rights violations and take appropriate action towards justice and peace. As Amnesty International presents its findings on the repression of protests to the government of Peru, we urge the authorities to take action and ensure such violations do not happen again.
