Indonesia’s Royal Golden Eagle Group’s Deforestation Controversy
Introduction
Deforestation, especially in the rainforests of Borneo, has been a topic of intense concern and debate in recent years. Unfortunately, a new controversy has emerged, as it has been discovered that Indonesia’s Royal Golden Eagle (RGE) Group, a large pulp and paper company, still has deforestation in its pulp supply chain, despite its commitment to “No Deforestation“. RGE has been linked to a new mega-scale pulp mill that is presently under construction in northeast Kalimantan, Indonesia, which is expected to threaten some of the world’s largest tropical rainforests.
RGE’s Current and Planned Operations Pose Risks for Rainforest Destruction in Kalimantan and Papua
This report’s objective is to raise awareness concerning RGE’s current and planned activities, which pose risks for rainforest destruction in Kalimantan and Papua. As the world’s most extensive producer of viscose, RGE has subsidiaries like Asia Pacific Resources International Limited (APRIL) in Indonesia, Bracell in Brazil, and Asia Symbol in China, which are leading producers in the global pulp, paper, and packaging sectors. However, this investigation reveals that RGE’s pulp mill in China has been using wood from companies that have cleared large tracts of tropical rainforest in Kalimantan, Indonesia’s territory on the island of Borneo. Before it was destroyed, much of the rainforest was habitat for endangered Bornean orangutans.
The Impact of Rainforest Industrialization in Borneo
Rainforest–industrialization poses a severe threat to the environment, especially habitats like that of Borneo. The excavations and deforestation lead to habitat loss and other environmental degradations, including soil erosion, landslides, water cycle disruption, and the loss of biodiversity. Borneo‘s rainforest is home to numerous endangered flora and fauna, and the destruction of their habitat may push these species further to the brink of extinction.
Editorial
Deforestation has been a long-standing issue in Indonesia, and despite the government’s efforts to reduce the extent of deforestation, the RGE Group’s activities are alarming. The fact that RGE is one of the world’s largest pulp and paper companies means that its operations have far-reaching consequences and underline the significance of enforcing environmental standards. The consequences of rainforest industrialization, besides endangering species, also pose a long-term threat to the biodiversity and ecological balance of adjacent areas.
Advice
It is essential to raise public awareness of the consequences of deforestation and large-scale industrialization, even if carried out by large corporations, as in this case. Governments and environmental organizations must create more stringent and specific policies and regulations to prevent deforestation and protect ecosystems. Besides, consumers can make individual efforts, such as choosing and supporting sustainably sourced products. In conclusion, while economic development is necessary, it must not be at the expense of the environment.
