UN: Create Body on Missing Syrians

Groups Urge UN General Assembly to Establish New Unit

June 23, 2023 – United Nations member countries are being urged to vote in favor of establishing a new humanitarian body that will focus on providing answers to the long-missing loved ones of Syrians. Human Rights Watch and over 100 other Syrian and international human rights organizations made this call in a joint letter published on June 23, 2023.

The resolution to establish the new UN unit is expected to be voted on as early as the week of June 26. The Syrian Network for Human Rights estimates that more than 100,000 people have gone missing during the 12 years of the conflict in Syria, with many believed to have been forcibly disappeared by the Syrian government.

Importance of Establishing a Humanitarian Institution

The establishment of a humanitarian institution dedicated to finding out what happened to the missing loved ones in Syria has been a desperate plea from the families affected. According to Louis Charbonneau, the UN director at Human Rights Watch, “UN member countries, including the Syrian government and its ally Russia, owe it to thousands of suffering Syrian families to vote in favor of this crucial initiative.”

The organizations behind the joint letter argue that the creation of this new UN institution will be a significant step in bringing long-awaited answers to countless Syrian families who have endured loss and uncertainty for years. They emphasized the need for UN member countries to fully fund the institution from the UN‘s regular budget and provide the necessary support and resources to ensure its success in fulfilling its mission.

Editorial: A Step Towards Accountability and Closure

The call to establish a new UN body to address the plight of missing Syrians is a critically important initiative that deserves the support of all member countries. The conflict in Syria has resulted in immense suffering and tragedy, and tens of thousands of families are still searching for answers about their missing loved ones. The establishment of a dedicated humanitarian institution to investigate and provide answers would be a significant step forward in addressing this dire situation.

Accountability is an essential pillar of justice, and it is critical that the international community takes concrete steps to address the issue of missing Syrians. By supporting the establishment of this new UN unit, member countries would be signaling their commitment to human rights, justice, and providing closure to the families affected by the conflict.

Furthermore, the full funding of this institution from the UN‘s regular budget is necessary to ensure its effectiveness and independence. The search for missing Syrians requires resources, expertise, and a long-term commitment. It is the responsibility of the international community to provide the necessary support to ensure the success of this vital endeavor.

Advice: Extending a Hand of Practical Support

The international community has a moral obligation to support and assist the families and victims of the Syrian conflict. The establishment of a new UN body focused on finding missing Syrians is an opportunity to extend a hand of practical support and assistance.

For member countries of the UN General Assembly, it is crucial to vote in favor of the resolution to create the new unit. This vote is not only a symbolic gesture but a tangible action that can contribute to bringing closure to countless families who have been living in uncertainty and despair for years. Every vote in support of this initiative provides hope to those who have been searching for answers.

Additionally, member countries should actively engage in discussions on fully funding the humanitarian institution. This requires a collective effort to ensure that the resources necessary for its success are made available. It is only through financial support that the institution will be able to carry out its mission effectively and provide the answers that families have been desperately seeking.

In Conclusion

The establishment of a new UN body dedicated to finding missing Syrians is a critical step towards accountability, justice, and closure for the families affected by the conflict. It is imperative that UN member countries come together and vote in favor of this resolution, demonstrating their commitment to human rights and supporting those who have suffered immense loss.

By providing full funding and necessary resources, the international community can demonstrate its solidarity with the Syrian people and provide hope for a better future. The time has come for action, and the establishment of this humanitarian institution is a tangible step in the right direction.
