Greenpeace France’s New Film: ‘TotalPollution: A Dirty Game’
The Shocking Truth About Fossil Fuel Greenwashing
Greenpeace France has recently released a compelling film titled ‘TotalPollution: A Dirty Game,’ which exposes the tactics used by fossil fuel companies, such as TotalEnergies, to deceive the public while contributing to climate destruction. By sponsoring popular sporting events like the Rugby World Cup, these companies attempt to distract us from their harmful practices and portray themselves as responsible actors in society. However, Greenpeace France aims to shed light on the true extent of their misconduct.
Visualizing the Quantity of Oil
The film begins by illustrating the unimaginable amount of oil produced by the global fossil fuel industry. In just 3 hours and 37 minutes, enough oil is extracted to fill a massive rugby stadium like the Stade de France. To help us comprehend this staggering quantity, Greenpeace France collaborated with Studio Birthplace, known for their previous work ‘Wasteminster: A Downing Street Disaster,’ to create a visual representation of the volume of oil that would be poured into the Stade de France during the Rugby World Cup kick-off. This powerful imagery aims to highlight the magnitude of oil consumption and the detrimental consequences for our future.
Fossil Fuel Greenwashing at the Rugby World Cup
While these fossil fuel companies continue to extract vast quantities of oil, they actively engage in strategic efforts to improve their public image. By sponsoring sports events like rugby, they attempt to align themselves with values such as integrity, passion, solidarity, discipline, and respect – values that are closely associated with the sport. This association serves as a smokescreen to divert attention away from their criminal climate destruction.
Unfortunately, these companies exhibit no intention of ceasing their fossil fuel extraction, even as they understand the adverse impact it has on our environment. Their addiction to record-breaking profits overshadows any concerns for the livability of our planet. In fact, the Rugby World Cup even attempted to halt the release of Greenpeace France’s film by issuing a cease and desist letter. However, Greenpeace remains steadfast in their commitment to shed light on the alarming truth, refusing to be silenced.
The Urgent Need for Action
Recognizing the Place for Fossil Fuels
Some of the host cities in France have made the important decision to exclude TotalEnergies from their fan zones, reflecting a growing awareness that there is no room for fossil fuels in the realm of sports or any other aspect of society. It is vital to expose the deceptive practices of the fossil fuel industry and the harm they cause to communities and the environment.
Banning Fossil Fuel Advertising and Sponsorship
Greenpeace France emphasizes the necessity of a complete ban on fossil fuel advertising and sponsorship of major sporting events. These activities serve only to benefit fossil fuel companies while purposefully diverting attention from their damaging environmental impact. To create a safer and fairer world, we must take decisive action to bring an end to the fossil fuel era.
Stopping Climate-Wrecking Crimes
The fossil fuel industry must be held accountable for their climate-wrecking crimes, particularly concerning new fossil fuel projects. Time is of the essence, and we cannot allow these companies to continue their harmful practices. By signing the petition, we can join forces in tackling the fossil fuel industry and ensuring they are removed from the playing field of our future.
Edina Ifticene, a campaigner at Greenpeace France, passionately advocates for change and urges individuals to confront the dirty game being played by TotalEnergies and other fossil fuel companies. Through collective action and a concerted effort to raise awareness, we can challenge this industry and pave the way for a sustainable, renewable energy future.
