Violent Attacks on Racialized People in Cyprus: A Wake-Up Call for Action

Rising Xenophobia and Racism in Cyprus

In recent weeks, Cyprus has witnessed a disturbing wave of violence targeting racialized people, including migrants and refugees. Pogrom-like demonstrations, fueled by racist rhetoric and hate speech, have resulted in the destruction of migrant-owned shops and physical attacks on individuals. These incidents, which took place in the towns of Limassol and Chlorakas, have highlighted the urgent need for the Cypriot authorities to address the rise of xenophobia and racism within the country.

Amnesty International’s Migration Researcher, Adriana Tidona, warns that these attacks should serve as a wake-up call for the authorities in Cyprus to take immediate measures to combat the persistent racist rhetoric and abuse that has permeated the country for years. It is crucial that the government recognizes the gravity of these incidents and implements comprehensive policies to prevent future violence and protect racialized communities, including migrants.

Police Inaction and the Role of Authorities

The responsibility for preventing and addressing these acts of violence lies not only with the perpetrators but also with the authorities who have a duty to protect all members of society. In the case of the attacks in Chlorakas, it is deeply concerning that the police allegedly failed to take action despite being informed about the social media posts that incited the violence. Such inaction raises questions about the effectiveness and commitment of law enforcement agencies to protect vulnerable communities.

The Urgency of Investigation and Accountability

Amnesty International, the Platform for International Cooperation on Undocumented Migrants (PICUM), and other advocacy organizations have called for an urgent investigation into the recent attacks and the police response to them. A thorough examination of these incidents is necessary to hold the perpetrators accountable and to shed light on any shortcomings in the response of the authorities.

More importantly, however, the Cypriot government must address the root causes of these acts of violence. It is unacceptable that government policies may have contributed to fostering an environment that encourages racism, hate speech, xenophobia, and intolerance. The promotion of inclusive and anti-discriminatory policies must become a priority to safeguard the rights and well-being of all individuals living in Cyprus.

Taking Action to Protect Vulnerable Communities

Countering Negative Narratives

Negative narratives surrounding migrants often fuel resentment and create a divisive atmosphere within society. The persistence of these narratives has likely played a role in fueling the recent attacks in Cyprus. It is essential for the government and civil society to come together to counter these negative narratives and promote a more inclusive and empathetic understanding of migration.

Local initiatives have already shown that solidarity from many people in Cyprus is strong, with individuals actively supporting those who have been targeted by the violence. The authorities must build upon this solidarity and actively promote the work of organizations and initiatives that seek to support racialized communities, including migrants. Ensuring that these organizations can operate without fear of threats and intimidation is essential for fostering a more inclusive society in Cyprus.

European Union’s Responsibility

While the attacks in Cyprus are deeply concerning, it is equally disheartening to note the silence of European Union (EU) member states in response to this violence. The EU has a responsibility to address racism and discrimination within its member states and take immediate action to protect vulnerable communities. The EU must voice its condemnation of these attacks and work alongside the Cypriot authorities to ensure that measures are put in place to prevent future violence.

The Path Forward

Cyprus is at a critical juncture where decisive action must be taken to address the rise of xenophobia and racism. The government must prioritize the protection of vulnerable communities, including migrants and refugees, by implementing comprehensive policies that combat hate speech, xenophobic rhetoric, and discriminatory practices.

Investigating the recent attacks and holding those responsible accountable is crucial for justice and prevention. Furthermore, fostering a more inclusive and empathetic society through education and awareness campaigns is necessary to challenge negative narratives and promote greater understanding among all members of society.

Ultimately, addressing the root causes of racism and intolerance requires a collective effort from government authorities, civil society organizations, and individuals. Only through this concerted approach can Cyprus build a more inclusive and harmonious society that celebrates diversity and protects the rights and well-being of all its residents.
