New York City Mayor Should Prioritize Human Rights over Harmful Discourse

Understanding the Impact of Mayor Adams’ Rhetoric

Last month, New York City Mayor Eric Adams made a damaging statement, claiming that the arrivals of migrants would “destroy New York City.” This rhetoric not only perpetuates harmful stereotypes but also undermines the rights and contributions of immigrants who comprise nearly a third of the city’s population. As a resident of New York City and the daughter of an Ecuadorian immigrant, I find these remarks deeply troubling.

The Importance of Adams’ Trip to Mexico, Ecuador, and Colombia

Mayor Adams is currently on a four-day trip to Mexico, Ecuador, and Colombia, where he plans to visit the treacherous Darién Gap, a jungle region on the Colombia-Panama border that has been crossed by over 300,000 migrants and refugees this year. This visit presents an opportunity for Adams to gain a better understanding of the human rights crises in the region that push people to leave their homes and seek asylum in the United States.

Humanitarian Crises Driving Migration

It is essential for Mayor Adams to grasp the dire circumstances faced by those who undertake the perilous journey through the Darién Gap. The largest number of migrants crossing the gap since January 2022 are Venezuelans, fleeing their country’s humanitarian emergency characterized by food and medicine shortages, as well as rampant abuses by security forces and armed groups.

Ecuadorians make up the second-largest group crossing the Darién Gap, escaping record levels of homicides and insecurity caused by organized crime groups. Haitians constitute the third-largest group, fleeing widespread violence, killings, kidnappings, and sexual violence perpetrated by criminal organizations in their home country.

The Need for Compassionate Policies

Instead of attempting to discourage migration, Mayor Adams should use his platform to advocate for compassionate policies that address the root causes of migration. Rather than turning people away, Adams should urge the Biden administration to put an end to deadly US migration deterrence policies, such as the “asylum rule,” and expand safe and legal pathways for migration.

Moreover, the Biden administration should reassess policies that have led to unsafe conditions for migrant children and implement fair procedures that prioritize family relationships and the need to seek asylum. It is crucial that migrants be received with dignity and provided necessary support and resources upon their arrival.

A Call for Redirecting Resources

Mayor Adams and other US mayors should consider redirecting funds from migration deterrence efforts towards humanitarian groups, shelter systems, legal support, and other resources that cater to the needs of newly arrived migrants. By redirecting these resources, cities can prioritize the well-being and rights of migrants, ensuring that they are given a fair chance to integrate into society.

Conclusion

Mayor Adams’ trip to Mexico, Ecuador, and Colombia presents an opportunity for him to gain a deeper understanding of the human rights crises that drive migration. It is crucial that he prioritizes human rights and uses his platform to advocate for compassionate policies that address the root causes of migration. By doing so, Adams can contribute to a more inclusive and welcoming environment for immigrants in New York City, recognizing the invaluable contributions they make to its rich and diverse fabric.
