Russian Human Rights Defender Convicted for “Discrediting” the Armed Forces

October 11, 2023 10:46AM EDT | Dispatches

Today, a Moscow court found Oleg Orlov, a leading Russian human rights defender, guilty on charges of “discrediting” the military by speaking out against the war in Ukraine. He was sentenced to a 150-ruble (approx. 1,500 USD) fine. This prosecution and verdict are a mockery of the rule of law and serve as a stark example of the government’s misuse of the judicial system to retaliate against critics.

Background and Implications

Oleg Orlov, a founding member of Memorial and co-winner of the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize, has been a prominent figure in the human rights movement in Russia. Despite great personal risks and pressure from friends and colleagues to leave the country, Orlov remained steadfast in his commitment to fight for justice and uphold human rights.

His activism included speaking out against Russia‘s war censorship legislation and advocating for accountability for abuses committed by the armed forces during the conflict in Ukraine. As a result, he faced repeated sanctions for his anti-war pickets and authored an op-ed condemning Russia‘s abusive tactics, which became the basis for the criminal charges against him.

Throughout his four-month trial, Orlov seized every opportunity to expose the Kremlin’s abuses and shed light on human rights violations in Russia. His conviction today marks a significant blow to the human rights community and raises serious concerns about the state of free speech and dissent in the country.

A Pattern of Targeting Human Rights Defenders

This case is not an isolated incident but part of a broader pattern of targeting human rights defenders in Russia. The government has increasingly used the judicial system as a tool to silence and punish those who dare to speak out against its policies and actions.

Orlov’s conviction sends a chilling message to other activists in Russia, instilling fear and discouraging them from engaging in critical discourse or challenging the government’s narrative. It further erodes the space for independent civil society and stifles any semblance of democratic dialogue in the country.

The Importance of International Support

Russian authorities must be called upon to vacate this disgraceful verdict and stop interfering with Orlov’s and other Russian human rights defenders’ work. The international community, including governments, organizations, and individuals, must stand in solidarity with those facing oppression and actively promote and protect human rights in Russia.

Orlov’s conviction should serve as a rallying cry for renewed efforts to pressure the Russian government to respect freedom of speech, protect human rights defenders, and uphold the rule of law. Continuing advocacy and support from all corners of the globe are crucial to safeguarding human rights in the face of escalating threats and challenges.

Conclusion and Call to Action

Oleg Orlov’s conviction is an alarming development that highlights the urgent need for international attention and action. The human rights community and governments worldwide must vocally condemn this verdict and make it clear that silencing dissent and criminalizing activism will not be tolerated.

Furthermore, meaningful pressure must be exerted on the Russian government to not only reverse this unjust ruling but also address the systemic targeting of human rights defenders and the erosion of civil liberties in the country.

The fight for human rights in Russia requires sustained support and solidarity from all who value freedom, justice, and dignity. By joining forces and advocating for change, we can help protect those like Oleg Orlov who are at the forefront of defending human rights, even amidst great personal risk.
