Greenpeace Launches Global Urban Movements Map on World Cities Day

Introduction

Greenpeace International, in collaboration with Clima e Mobilidade and the Urban Movement Innovation Fund, launched a global Urban Movements Map on World Cities Day. The interactive platform provides information about grassroots groups, organizations, and movements working on climate justice in cities around the world. The map aims to empower communities, inspire collaboration, and hold governments accountable for their actions.

Perceptions of Government and Urban Movements

A recent opinion poll commissioned by Greenpeace International highlighted that governments are no longer perceived as the sole entities capable of transforming cities. Urban residents, especially those in low-income communities, believe that urban and social movements, along with their own communities, play a significant role in improving their quality of life. This shift in perception reflects a growing recognition of the importance of collective action and citizen engagement in addressing the climate crisis.

Gabriela Vuolo, Urban Justice Global Campaign Leader at Greenpeace International, emphasized the importance of organizing communities and strengthening urban movements as crucial ways to make the voices of the most marginalized heard and to hold decision-makers accountable. The Urban Movements Map aims to showcase these initiatives and provide a platform for activists, media, and communities to participate in local initiatives and foster collaboration.

Inspiring Collaborations and Highlighting Success Stories

The Urban Movements Map features a diverse range of movements, including cycling groups in Manila, wastepickers’ movements in Bogota, and right to land organizations in Nairobi. By providing information about these urban movements, the map serves as a resource for activists, media, and communities interested in joining local initiatives and fostering collaboration. Furthermore, the map can help identify success stories that can inspire and guide other movements and communities worldwide.

Aline Cavalcante, Director of Clima e Mobilidade, emphasized the power of collective action in tackling the multiple crises society faces today. She stated that by shedding light on the millions of individuals working creatively towards immediate solutions, especially in the global south and on the periphery of the capitalist system, the map can inspire and drive transformative change in urban lives.

Utilizing the Map as a Tool for Change

The Urban Movements Map serves as a powerful tool for activists and movements facing similar challenges and barriers in different cities. By providing a platform for knowledge sharing and collaboration, the map facilitates the replication and scaling up of successful ideas and solutions. It enables cities to become greener, safer, fairer, and more inclusive.

As part of the Urban October initiatives carried out by Greenpeace International, the map will be regularly updated with information about featured groups, as well as the addition of new movements and organizations. This ongoing effort ensures that the map remains a dynamic resource and a source of inspiration for urban movements worldwide.

Conclusion

Greenpeace International’s launch of the Urban Movements Map on World Cities Day signifies the importance of collective action and grassroots efforts in tackling the climate crisis. By highlighting the voices and initiatives of urban movements, the map empowers communities, fosters collaboration, and holds governments accountable. It serves as a valuable resource for activists, media, and communities worldwide, facilitating knowledge sharing and inspiring transformative change.
