Amnesty International Appoints Erika Guevara-Rosas as Head of Global Research, Advocacy, and Policy

Leading the Fight for Human Rights in a Changing World

In a move to bolster its human rights agenda around the world, Amnesty International has appointed Erika Guevara-Rosas as the new head of Global Research, Advocacy, and Policy. Guevara-Rosas, who previously served as the organization’s Americas director, brings a wealth of experience and leadership to her new role. With the world facing multiple crises, including armed conflicts and the climate collapse, Amnesty International is determined to ensure that global struggles for justice and human rights prevail.

Challenges and Determination

Guevara-Rosas’s appointment comes at a critical time when challenges to the protection of human rights are at an all-time high. The rise of anti-rights movements and the push to shut down civic space pose significant threats to vulnerable populations. However, Guevara-Rosas remains optimistic about the potential for positive change.

“We’re at a very delicate crossroads,” said Guevara-Rosas. “While anti-rights groups are gaining strength, we’re also witnessing the emergence of diverse social movements fighting for human rights, climate justice, and equality. As the Universal Declaration of Human Rights turns 75 this year, we will keep working to fulfill its promise of a better, fairer world.”

A Record of Impact

During her tenure as the Americas director, Guevara-Rosas has made significant strides in strengthening Amnesty International’s presence and impact in the region. She has led campaigns, conducted innovative research, and advocated on behalf of historically marginalized populations, including Indigenous Peoples, Black communities, human rights defenders, environmentalists, migrants, refugees, women, and LGBTIQ+ people.

Under Guevara-Rosas’s leadership, Amnesty International has achieved notable successes, such as contributing to the legalization and decriminalization of abortion in Argentina, Colombia, and Mexico. The organization has also played a vital role in lobbying for countries to sign the Escazú Agreement, seeking justice for human rights defenders and securing the release of prisoners of conscience.

Ambitious Agenda and Collaborative Approach

Guevara-Rosas emphasized that Amnesty International has adapted its strategies to align with a more ambitious, feminist, and anti-racist agenda. The organization has worked closely with sister organizations, contributed to major investigations into human rights abuses in the Americas, and shed light on issues such as US migration policies, feminicides, and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic in the region.

Guevara-Rosas’s appointment as head of Global Research, Advocacy, and Policy positions her to work closely with the Secretary General and other senior colleagues to increase Amnesty International’s impact on human rights at national, regional, and global levels. She will lead a team of over 200 staff engaged in research, crisis response, policy development, campaigns, and advocacy work.

Ana Piquer to Serve as Interim Americas Director

As Guevara-Rosas transitions to her new role, Ana Piquer will serve as the interim Americas Director. Piquer brings extensive experience within Amnesty International, having previously served as Executive Director of Amnesty International Chile and Deputy Director for Research in the Americas. Her appointment ensures continuity and stability in the organization’s work in the region.

Looking Ahead

Amnesty International’s appointment of Erika Guevara-Rosas reflects its commitment to upholding human rights in the face of unprecedented challenges. As she and Amnesty International’s teams continue their crucial work, they will strive to forge a more humane planet and fulfill the promises of justice, dignity, and equality for all.
