Greenpeace Calls for Global Day of Action to Protect Deep Sea Oceans

Greenpeace, a global environmental organization, has called for a global day of action to protect the deep sea oceans on Saturday, 3 June. The day of action aims to raise awareness and demand the protection of the largest ecosystem on the planet before the International Seabed Authority meeting in Jamaica, where the fate of deep sea mining will be decided. Governments will decide whether to allow or prohibit deep sea mining, an industry that Greenpeace says is highly destructive and damaging to the oceans.

The Importance of Protecting Deep Sea Oceans

The deep sea oceans play a crucial role in our ecosystem, and destroying them could have severe consequences. Greenpeace highlights that if deep sea mining is allowed, the wondrous deep-sea species and marine life that we are only just beginning to understand could be lost forever. Carbon sinks and storage could also be severely disturbed, causing more damage to the planet. Moreover, Pacific people’s way of life, which has intrinsic connections to the ocean’s spiritual and cultural elements, could be seriously impacted.

The Need for Action Now

Governments have not yet reached an agreement to protect the oceans from deep sea mining. The door has been left open for the industry to start plundering the seabed this year, which is unacceptable. Governments, organizations, and individuals need to act now to stop this industry from starting and ensure that the deep-sea oceans are protected.

Greenpeace’s Campaign to Stop Deep Sea Mining

Greenpeace’s Stop Deep Sea Mining campaign aims to halt the launch of this destructive new extractive industry. The organization believes that a global moratorium is needed to protect the deep sea oceans, and it calls on governments, organizations, and individuals worldwide to join the campaign and demand that the industry is stopped.

Taking Action

Protecting the deep sea oceans is crucial for the planet’s health and the preservation of marine life. Greenpeace urges concerned citizens worldwide to join the campaign and take action by checking out the events on the map and participating in the global day of action. It is essential to raise awareness and demand governments to protect the oceans, facing down one of the latest forms of neo-colonialism while challenging a greedy industry that is trying to legitimize its activity through greenwashing. World Oceans Day, coming up on 8 June, is an excellent time to take a stand for marine ecosystems and push more governments to come out against deep sea mining, building momentum to deliver ocean protection.
