Vietnam Should Release Land Rights Activist

July 12, 2023 9:00AM EDT

By

Introduction

In Vietnam, the government’s systematic elimination of the human rights and democracy movement is deeply concerning. The Vietnamese government’s continuous arrest and imprisonment of peaceful activists reflects a violation of international human rights law and a betrayal of its duty as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council. Truong Van Dung, a land rights activist, is the latest victim of this crackdown. On July 13, his appeal of a six-year prison sentence will be heard, although it is unlikely that his sentence will be reduced or reversed.

Truong Van Dung’s “Crimes”

Truong Van Dung’s supposed “crimes” were exercising his rights to freedom of expression, association, and peaceful assembly. He participated in public protests on issues such as Vietnam‘s policies towards China, environmental and land rights issues, government corruption, and the protection of basic human rights. Additionally, he publicly boycotted Vietnam‘s national elections, which are neither free nor fair under the ruling Vietnam Communist Party. Despite his limited means, Truong Van Dung provided financial and other support to political prisoners, land rights petitioners, and their families.

Years of Government Harassment

Truong Van Dung has endured years of government harassment and intimidation, including police interrogations, house arrest, travel bans, and physical assaults. Despite facing these unjust actions, he remains resolute. In 2014, after being assaulted by unknown attackers, he stated, “I will not budge. The more they act this way, the more inspired I will be on my path… I am very proud of myself. I did nothing to be ashamed of.”

The Ripple Effect

Each time the Vietnamese authorities imprison an activist like Truong Van Dung, it is a blow to human rights in Vietnam. It is essential for donors and international trade partners to recognize that promoting human rights is not a threat to economic growth, but rather a crucial part of a country’s progress. Vietnam must understand that allowing people to express their opinions strengthens the nation.

Conclusion

Vietnam‘s treatment of Truong Van Dung highlights the urgent need for human rights reforms in the country. The government must recognize and protect the fundamental human rights of its citizens. International pressure is necessary to hold Vietnam accountable for its actions and to advocate for the release of Truong Van Dung and other political prisoners. It is through respecting rights and embracing diverse voices that Vietnam can truly progress.
