Barbie’s electric car and Ken’s SUV – Is there a better option to the real world?

The Climate Impact of Transport

Barbie‘s iconic pink ride in the hugely successful Barbie movie may look stylish, but it raises an important question about the impact of transport on the global climate crisis. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), transport is responsible for over one-fifth of direct CO2 emissions from fuel combustion, with passenger vehicles contributing the largest portion at 45%. As a Barbie Girl living in a warming world, Barbie should consider rethinking her approach to cars.

Alternatives to Driving

While Barbie has had several chic and luxurious cars over the years, it’s worth considering whether driving is truly necessary for her daily activities. In most cases, whether she’s at the beach or in the neighborhood, Barbie prefers to walk or roller skate. Studies have shown that cars are parked 95% of the time and occupy vast amounts of space. In the US, private cars are often driven around with only 1.6 people on average, highlighting the inefficiency of single-passenger journeys.

The Transition to Electric Vehicles

One positive aspect of Barbie‘s car evolution is her transition from driving fossil fuel-powered cars to an electric vehicle (EV). According to the International Council on Clean Transportation, the life-cycle emissions of battery electric vehicles registered in Europe, the United States, China, and India are significantly lower than comparable gasoline cars. This shift towards EVs is a step in the right direction, but there are still challenges to be addressed.

The Issue of SUVs

Ken, on the other hand, has an electric SUV, which raises questions about the excessive reliance on larger cars. Studies in the US and Australia have highlighted the growing popularity of big cars, with electric SUVs accounting for over half of electric car sales and breaking records. However, bigger cars require larger batteries and contribute to the demand for critical minerals and carbon-intensive auto steel. The rise in SUV sales has also resulted in a surge in carbon dioxide emissions, almost negating the emissions reduction achieved by transitioning to EVs.

Towards a Sustainable Future

To make EVs a truly sustainable option, efforts in Barbie Land (and the real world) should focus on reducing car sizes and investing in renewable charging facilities. Holding automakers accountable for battery durability, energy efficiency, repairability, reuse, and recyclability will also help minimize the use of virgin materials. Additionally, Barbie should have access to affordable and efficient public transport options, such as buses, trains, or metros. Implementing multi-use roads with safe spaces for pedestrians and bicycles, as well as low-emission zones that only allow zero-emission mobility services, would be a significant step towards a greener future.

Final Thoughts

As Barbie and Ken consider their transportation options, it is important to recognize the impact their choices have on the environment. While an electric car is a positive step towards reducing emissions, the popularity of SUVs and the inefficiencies of single-passenger journeys highlight the need for more sustainable approaches to transportation. By embracing smaller vehicles, investing in renewable charging infrastructure, and prioritizing public transport alternatives, Barbie and Ken can contribute to a greener future and set an example for the real world.

Joining the Drive for Change

To address the urgent need for automakers to transition to zero-emission vehicles, environmental organizations like Greenpeace are advocating for change. Their Drive Change Campaign calls for car companies to help create a world with affordable, convenient, and diverse zero-carbon mobility options for all. By demanding that automakers quit fossil fuel vehicles, individuals can play their part in driving the necessary change towards a sustainable future.
