Greenpeace Condemns G7‘s Failure to Address Climate Emergency

Greenpeace International, a non-governmental environmental organization, has condemned the members of the G7 Summit for endorsing new fossil gas despite the ongoing climate emergency. The G7 leaders have demonstrated a complete denial of the havoc fossil fuel emissions have been wreaking on our planet.

Stark Reality of G7‘s Ambition vs Climate Science

The members of the G7 Summit have failed to take heed of the warnings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and act immediately to address the climate emergency. Their failure to phase out fossil fuels and endorsement of new fossil gas will only doom current and future generations to sink deeper in a climate crisis.

Greenpeace’s Global Climate Politics Expert, Tracy Carty, has reiterated that the gap between G7 ambition and what climate science demands is stark and widening. When G7 leaders refuse to shift gear and continue promoting fossil gas, the future they create will be a scorching one.

Fossil Gas and LNG Industry – One of the Biggest Fossil Fuel Threats

The rapidly expanding liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry is one of the biggest fossil fuel threats to address the climate emergency. Fossil gas, in its liquefied form, produces carbon emissions that are as bad as coal. It is one of the most polluting forms of energy, and its endorsement by G7 leaders is a blunt denial of the climate emergency.

Japan’s Lack of Commitment on Climate Change Efforts

Greenpeace Japan has criticized Japan’s lack of commitment to accelerate climate change efforts and phase out coal. Despite coal accounting for 40% of energy-related CO2 emissions globally, Japan blocked a 2030 coal phase-out date. Similarly, they were an obstacle to making any firm commitments to seriously accelerate zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) sales.

Japan is promoting dangerous false solutions such as ammonia co-firing and carbon capture utilization and storage to address climate change. These approaches contradict scientific evidence and most developing countries’ national climate plans, only serving industrial interests. Exporting false solutions will impede global efforts to address climate change.

Editorial – Time for G7 Leaders to Act on Climate Emergency

The G7 leaders must acknowledge that their failure to take immediate action on the climate emergency will have disastrous consequences. The endorsement of fossil gas and lack of commitment to accelerate climate change efforts is unacceptable. The damaging effects of climate change on our planet are irreversible and will ultimately lead to unprecedented catastrophes.

The G7 leaders must deliver on their promises and take urgent and decisive action to address the climate emergency. The world is growing hotter, and time is running out. It is time for the G7 leaders to step up and demonstrate real leadership on the climate crisis.

Advice

Climate change is an existential threat to the planet, and the need to address it cannot be overemphasized. We must all do our part to tackle climate change and hold our leaders accountable for their promises. Our individual choices and actions can make a difference. We must strive to reduce our carbon footprint, support clean energy, and support organizations working to address the climate emergency.
